Passing on Traditions: Granita, Family & the Florida Sun

Updated: Mar 26

Family on couch - Passing on Traditions: Granita, Family & the Florida Sun - Caffe Alanno, Granita in Boston

At Caffe Alanno, every scoop of granita is more than a refreshing dessert—it’s a celebration of heritage, a link to our past, and a gift we’re proud to pass on. This belief recently took Karen and Mike, the founders of Caffe Alanno, on a special trip to Florida, where they visited Karen’s sister, brother-in-law, nieces, grand-nieces, and grand-nephew.

And, of course, granita-making became the highlight of the visit.

Bringing a Piece of Sicily to Florida

There’s something beautifully symbolic about making granita in Florida. The heat of the sun, the joy of family, and the need for something cold and sweet to cool you off—it’s the perfect setting for a frozen treat born on the sun-soaked island of Sicily.

But for Karen and Mike, this wasn’t just about flavor. It was about passing on a tradition—one that their Italian ancestors cherished and that continues to live on in every lovingly prepared batch of granita.

Teaching the Next Generation

During their stay, Karen and Mike spent time in the kitchen with the younger family members, sharing not only the how but the why behind granita. It was more than just following a recipe; it was about instilling the value of slowing down, using fresh ingredients, and honoring tradition.

Children gathered around the counter, curious and excited, as Mike blended up fresh watermelon and strawberry—two of the most beloved flavors in the Caffe Alanno collection. The vibrant pinks and reds of the fruit stood out against the Florida sunshine pouring in through the windows, creating a memory that was as much about the experience as it was about the taste.

Though they didn’t bring any specialty equipment from home, they adapted with a simple blender and basic supplies already on hand. That’s part of what makes granita so special—it doesn’t require fancy tools. Just fruit, water, sugar, time, and care.

As the mixture slowly froze, Mike showed the kids how to scrape the granita at intervals, explaining how the flaky, crystalline texture forms when the mixture is stirred gently over time. The children took turns helping, hands-on in the process, watching it transform into a refreshing, spoonable treat.

Moments That Matter

It wasn’t just about the final product—it was about the process. The storytelling. The laughter. The shared anticipation as everyone waited for the granita to freeze.

Passing down family traditions often happens in quiet, simple moments—standing side-by-side in a kitchen, tasting fruit to see if it’s sweet enough, and explaining why this is how Nana used to do it.

For Karen and Mike, watching the younger generation participate brought a deep sense of fulfillment. Granita is one small—but meaningful—way to keep their Sicilian roots alive.

And for the kids, it was more than a fun kitchen project—it was their first step into carrying the family’s legacy forward, one scoop at a time.

Why Traditions Like These Matter

In a world that moves fast and is often filled with convenience foods and quick fixes, taking time to make something by hand, especially something rooted in cultural identity, is a beautiful act of resistance—and love.

Granita, with its simplicity and richness, reminds us of the value of natural ingredients, patience, and connection. For Karen and Mike, teaching their family how to make granita wasn’t just about sharing a recipe—it was about creating memories and ensuring that their Italian heritage continues to flourish, even hundreds of miles from Boston or Sicily.

Looking Ahead

As Caffe Alanno prepares for another exciting season, these moments spent with family are at the heart of everything they do. Every scoop served at a market or event carries the weight of these shared experiences—the stories, the history, and the hope that others will continue passing them on.

So next time you enjoy a pint of Caffe Alanno granita, know that you’re tasting more than just fruit and ice. You’re tasting family, tradition, and love—handed down from generation to generation.
